Elizabeth Vandiver (b. 1956) is a noted professor of classics at Whitman College in Washington. Her works include Heroes in Herodotus, and she has recorded numerous lectures on the classics for The Teaching Company. Vandiver received her undergraduate education from Shimer College, a Great Books school where she enrolled at age 16 through the early entrance program, and her doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. This article was imported from Wikipedia on 2012-01-20. Elizabeth Vandiver is a noted professor of classics. She is currently Associate Professor of classics at Whitman College, having previously taught at the University of Maryland, College Park.[1] She received the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Philological Association in 1998.[1] She won awards for her teaching from Northwestern University and the University of Georgia.[1] In 2013 she won Whitman College's Thomas G. Edwards Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching.
She did undergraduate work at Shimer College where she first attended at the age of 16. She got a B.A. degree in 1976 and then worked several years as a librarian. She received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1990. Her dissertation was on Herodotus and was published as Heroes in Herodotus: The Interaction of Myth and History. In February 2010, Oxford University Press published her groundbreaking study "Stand in the Trench, Achilles: Classical Receptions in British Poetry of the Great War." She has taught at the University of Maryland, Northwestern University, the University of Georgia, the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, Italy, Loyola University New Orleans, Louisiana, and Utah State University.[1]
