An intense faculty/administration struggle for the direction of the experiment, mostly occuring during the acedemic year 1966-1967. That year saw a majority of the faculty resign and was also the peak year of enrollment of the student body, with ~520 both in Mt. Carroll and Oxford.

November of 1967 saw the then President of Shimer F. Joesph Mullin resign, effective at the end of summer 1968.
