In the history of Shimer College, the Mount Carroll campus follows the Seminary campus (1853-1906), and is followed in turn by the Waukegan campus (1978-2006) and Chicago campus (2006-present). Its construction began in earnest after the original Seminary campus was entirely destroyed by fire in February 1906, although a few buildings were built prior to this fire.
Most of the buildings on the Mount Carroll campus were built in brick in the Georgian Revival style, during the presidency of William Parker McKee.
